Project
My assignment was to come up with an original magazine idea. I then had to have a cover, the cover story spread, and a list spread.
Idea
My idea for the magazine was to do something related to my hobbies. I went with a longboarding magazine since most skate magazines center around skateboarding and longboarding is a sub genre within skating. I wanted the magazine to be built around the stunning photography and videography found within longboarding culture.
Cover
The name of the magazine I created is called Free Rider. Its a play on a style of longboarding called free-riding and the words free rider. The cover story I went with was in honor of a downhill longboarder, Josh Neuman, who passed away shortly before I began the project.
Iterations
I went through many of Neumans videos and photos to find a high resolution photo that I could work off of. Then it was about making the text readable throughout the photo.
Final
I liked the grainy look of the photo so I emphasized it more to show the speeds that Neuman was going in the still photo.
Cover Spread
This is the page spread of the story showcased on the cover of the magazine.
Iterations
I wanted to create a good amount of balance between the two pages without disruption the beauty of the photo.

List Spread
The idea of the list was to go over, in my opinion, the best types of wheels for downhill skating.
Iteration
It was about finding out how I wanted to organize the lists. Once I figured it out, the designing part fell into place.
